    + Abstract

The theme of this work is the attraction and retention of creative human capital, focusing on what can be distinctive from place to place. This case study seeks an understanding of attraction and retention factors specifically connected to Porto in the northern region of Portugal, taking into consideration the demographic, socioeconomics and cultural characteristics of the city.
A theoretical approach has been made, cross-referencing the work of several academics from this area of research, analyzing the knowledge and nature of concepts such as: talent, creative class, creative industries and economic growth potential of a place plus the identification of the specific attraction factors of the territory.
The work also contains an empirical perspective which is centered on the vision of key opinion makers with the capacity to develop policy and implement them within the Creative Industries in Portugal. The aforementioned attraction factors have been identified, as well as possible lines of action stemming from them, in an attempt to understand their impact on the region and, in particular, on the city of Porto.

    + Abstract

This research work attempts to extend the existing literature on development strategies for creative tourism supply and on the use of new technology in tourism, specifically creative tourism, which cannot be found in most of the existing literature. Hence, this work proposes a strategy to develop creative tourism in the city of Porto, paying special attention to the role played by new technology.
This study comprises an analysis of the current state of creative tourism in Porto and the use of technology in the current tourism strategy. A case study method for the city of Porto is undertaken and qualitative approach is conducted interpretatively.
A seven-steps model is proposed for developing creative tourism in the city of Porto, in which new technology plays an important role. Networking is also considered as a continued input of this model.
In this work, the supply ecosystem was analysed and potential service providers were taken into account. Future research could focus on tourist motivations to participate in creative activities.
This study encourages key creative and/or cultural agents to take the opportunity to acknowledge their potential to develop a creative tourism offer and to be aware that this kind of tourism could be an opportunity to improve the sustainability of their businesses. It also draws attention of city leaders to this topic as a new way of enhancing the tourism experience and improving economic growth. It may also encourage these agents to develop new offers within the range of their activities, maximizing the potential of technology that they may already use. Furthermore, it provides knowledge about new ways in which to develop creative tourism innovation and to take advantage of the benefits that new technology may bring.
The originality of this work is based on developing a new model for creative tourism in Porto, paying special attention to the implementation and integration of new technology. The model intends to be a guide to promoting a creative tourism policy for Porto, but it could also be used as a basis for other cities to foster this kind of tourism.

The present exploratory study aims to raise awareness among readers about the future of the cities, leveraging the challenges and responsibilities of the cities to provide and maintain the necessary conditions in order to offer a better quality of life for its citizens. The City itself plays the leading role in this proposal to rethink cities not only because it is the scene of our lives but also the motor of the economy and the identity of a people and their history. This study aims to present the different historical scenarios to which cities have been exposed and the strategies that have been adopted in order of its adaptation and thriving in society. The environmental context and chronology are introduced by a deductive reasoning that starts with a macro perspective of global environment challenges and incidents which is followed by the presentation of the main international initiatives (confirming an environmental concern that is spreading worldwide). Finally we approach urban sustainability in the European scenario, lightened by 3 important initiatives of the European Commission (Local21Agenda, Covenant of Mayors and European Green Capital Award). Cities face a great number of challenges and we feel that sustainable development and identity preservation are the points chosen as priority in the durability and viability of the cities. The Green City and Creative City concepts are explored in order to disclose their relevance in the challenges identified above. The cities of Hamburg (Germany) and Nantes (France) we selected as practical examples of avant-garde european cities, which have proven to be more aware of the urgency in adopting policies and behavioral patterns that encourage the sustainable development, and the need to preserve the culture and the identity of the city itself in order to avoid the homogenization of the cultures in consequence of an increasingly globalized society.

    + Abstract

Nowadays music festivals are an important subset in the universe of culture events and it has received interest from several areas of study, given to their universality and the popularity of the provided experiences. Some gaps in the literature under the subject “Event Tourism" have been less explored like those related to planning and event organization involving the organizations, the partners, the politics, the goals, the strategies, the impacts and the evolution. According to the gaps founded in the literature, in the context of event tourism, it becomes relevant the study of music festivals as promoters of cultural tourism. In this context we defined as the main goal: to understand if music festivals may be promoters of cultural tourism. As secondary goals: to characterize the business model of the festivals: Milhões de Festa, Paredes de Coura, Primavera Sound; to compare the business model of the 3 festivals; to characterize the public assistance of the three festivals; to compare the public assistance of the three festivals; to understand if the three festivals can be a hallmark. The three promoters of the festivals: Milhões de Festa, Paredes de Coura, Primavera Sound, have participated in this study, and filled a questionnaire with the purpose to describe and characterize the business model. A semistructured interview was applied to the promoters of the festivals and to the regional director for northern culture to gather data about the festivals as culture tourism. The results of this study show us that the main source of financing come from the tickets sold. Some differences were found in second source of financing, private and state-owned. The state-owned financing of Milhões de Festa festival are the second source, in the contrast with the other two festivals. When it comes to financial expenditures, the booking of bands is the main expense, highlighting the Primavera Sound festival. The expenses on the general production of Milhões de Festa and Paredes de Coura are similar and higher to the Primavera Sound. The expenses with the team are similar in the 3 festivals. The public assistance is mostly portuguese, with the exception of Primavera Sound where most of the assistance is from outside of Portugal. The portuguese assistance is mostly outside of the city or town where the festivals Milhões de Festa and Paredes de Coura take place. In conclusion the music festivals are promoters of cultural tourism, because they arouse the interest of thousand of persons to experience a unique and unrepeatable experience, with an economic, social and media big impact in order to promote the city, the town, the region and the country. All this aspects allow us to define the music festivals, as a hallmark of the region, therefore they should be include in the strategic plan of tourism of Portugal.

    + Abstract

The present work aims to analyse the creation, production and promotion of festivals in the restricted scope of experimental music, taking into account particularly the various financial models and the produced interactions. Trying to implement the promotion and publicity of experimental music in Portugal (from the accoustic music till the more electronic one), some national agents have produced or helped to produce along the years several events under the form of festivals or one-off events, that for unknown reasons have collapsed or entered into "hibernation". Despite the efforts made over the years, we found only eleven festivals dedicated to this type of music, but only seven are active and only two (MadeiraDig and Out.Fest) have more than 10 editions. Given this discontinuity in the production of this kind of festivals in Portugal, we wanted to understand firstly the evolution of the experimental music over the past century, observing the creative and productive models generated during this time, providing a disruption from the traditional models of musical composition (Cascone, Cage). In second place, we want to comprehend the proliferation of these new models of production and creation of sound pieces and understand how the festivals may result of the produced information flow. We begin to observe and analyze the festivals, artists and publishers in the international context, which over the years, references emerge to the diffusion and promotion of experimental music. On the other side we started a inquiry process directed to the developers / producers of festivals, programmers of spaces / entities and labels in the national context whitch is professionally related to the music / experimental art. This process is constituted by three surveys molded according to their professional activities adopting a process evolutionary in relation to the questions to obtain data corresponding to the object of study. The obtained results in this research show that prodution models of experimental music festivals with impact on music in Portugal, are not governed by a basic pattern of prodution in special. We can point as factors to the discontinuity of these festivals a strong dependence on State and private supports, as the revenue obtained during the event is not superior to the costs of production. The restricted core on the number of spectators also contributes to the devaluation in performing these events, since the financial return of those is non-existent.

    + Abstract

The difficult task of innovation is a key facet of Research & Development (R&D) institutions. Innovation is also closely related with processes oriented to achieve solutions in design. By addressing this topic, we propose to research new emerging design methods and provide an overview of design thinking tools that can be applied in an early stage of the R&D research process in order to produce meaningful results.
This research presents a set of experimental guidelines and an analysis method for the application of these tools. In particular, it is taken into account that design, through design thinking, extends to the experience that costumers/users have with products, services, spaces or even multidimensional experiences, which is a relevant input for R&D innovation development.
It is well known that design has changed its scope beyond the conception of artifacts: Design thinking methodologies have resulted from the advancement of current design paradigms. However, design thinking is not a new design discipline. It is a fresh multi-disciplinary platform that utilizes conceptual tools in order to provide steps towards innovation. In fact, the establishment of coherent guidelines for the design thinking process is a very complex task, due to its interdisciplinary requirements, that convey many diverse mindsets.
The main focus of this study is creating an analysis toolkit that enables non-specialist and specialist users to perform high-quality design production.
This methodological tool is being applied in the framework of two research centers, namely, the Research center for Science and Technology of the Arts and the Telecommunication Institute of Oporto University. These trials provide valuable pilot studies in order to determine the efficiency of this ‘mind map’ in the R&D innovation process.

Being the ‘Creative Industries’ (CI) a growing economical sector, many studies have tried to define it as well as to identify it's subsectors. However, the discussion still remains as to whether the sector should be called ‘Cultural Industries’ or if these should be included inside the wider CI group. Other discussions debate how the CI should be identified. So, what are Creative Industries? What makes this sector different from other sectors? It is of vital importance to define this sector and not just enumerate possible subsectors, so that future mappings can provide us exact numbers on its extension and influence on economy, both direct and indirect. This study aims to contribute to the definition of Creative Industries by analyzing previous definitions, namely in terms of criteria and subsectors.

In 2012, the music industry is showing positive growth for the first time in fifteen years. The same year, Game of Thrones is declared the most pirated TV series with an average of 4.28 million illegal downloads for each episode. Ever since the creation of Napster in 1998, online piracy became a common practice which is weakly reprehended socially-speaking. The starting point for our work was Gabe Newell's idea that piracy is not a matter of price but a problem of service rendered to customers. Such an opinion orientates our work towards finding a solution against piracy thanks business. To find this possible solution we started with the evolution of open source software because the concept and its history brings us to the notion of copyleft and the creation of the Creative Commons. These ideas translate to new ways of sharing intellectual property. But to understand these notions correctly we need to explain how cultural works are protected by the law. Which is why we introduce author rights and copyrights in several countries. When we know how the law works and the tools that have been developed to simplify them, we can start giving examples of businesses which are distributing digital cultural products legally. But a comparison between both legal and illegal offers is necessary to explain why customers choose piracy. Thus, in addition to the market study of legal offers, we also study pirate offer. Such comparison showed that several factors make customers willing to break the law to access cultural products. With our study we analyze the factors that might help in justifying this choice.

The Creative Industries are those in which products, goods and creative services are produced with intrinsic symbolic value, thus, cultural capital. This dissertation is about the usage of public policy to fuel the creative industries, from the business vantage point, in the city of Porto and its surrounding region, the north of Portugal.
The investigation looks into the concepts, methodologies and analytical instruments that esteemed authors utilize in their works on the theme of Creative Industries, completed with a synthesis of the context of the city and its region. From that process, a comprehensive theoretical approach is produced and used in a research process that includes interviews of several businesses in the creative industries, selected according to a conceptual model that comprises the sectors to be analyzed, according to their approach to the market.
The findings within the research process contribute to illuminate the inner workings of the creative and cultural sector, as they are coupled with the positioning emergent from the critical analysis, from which strategical aspects of a public policy model will be drawn. The prospective policy suggested aims at being a more comprehensive model, as its focus addresses the mechanics of the creative industries, both in the capital that drives it, as well as the human talent and creativity that fuels it. Cities can reap multiple visible and invisible benefits that a thriving creative industries sector offers.

XX.

    + Abstract

The main objective of this dissertation was to expose the process involved in the design and the actual design of a nutrition label for restaurant’s menus.
The increasing overweight and obesity rates are a major concern for health organizations and governments. In order to fight this epidemic, the Commission of the European Communities outlined a Strategy for Europe on Nutrition, Overweight and Obesity related to health issues determining, among others, that providing nutritional information to consumers is a critical factor that may influence healthier food choices. Since the habit of eating out-of-home is related to the increasing overweight and obesity rates as well, the disclosure of nutritional information in restaurants (or mass caterers in general) can provide guidance to consumers while choosing their food.
The process of designing a nutrition label for restaurant’s menu was divided in to parts. The first part addressed research on communication, infographics and on the state-of-the-art of nutrition labels. The second part, and supported in the collected information and case studies’ analysis, was related with determining the type of information to include in the label and the nutritional criteria in which it was going to be based. It also included the actual design decisions related to the model of a nutrition label for restaurants’ menus, to be software generated.
As future work it was pointed the necessity of testing it within the market and consumers and to develop an interactive solution for providing customized nutritional guidance.

Innovation as a tool for creating value for companies stands as the first goal for managers in this competitive world we live today. Design Thinking (DT) has brought the attention of both academics and practitioners as a powerful methodology to connect with human needs and behaviour.
The growing awareness of confronting and answering to social world problems has also positioned DT as influential instrument to grow and allowing social innovation (SI) to emerge.
Co-creation (CC) transformed the social system that organizations and consumers interacted. Today, institutions promote experiences that better suits the needs of the individuals, with the goal of producing better products and services. Co-design (CD) refers to the methodology of applying co-creation techniques to the DT. It adds value to this innovation process as it enforces the idea of experience between the users/producers.
Relevant to this phenomenon, is Internet. It has shaped the large community of users as individuals worried with the difficulties world faces nowadays. This community creates new meanings everyday and introduced the notion that we as humans can design artefacts collectively.
This research investigates the committed role of a specific online platform to form a community to solve world challenges, by the implementation of a design thinking methodology. The mission of this dissertation is to understand what occurs when a group of individuals co-create for social innovation, and what can we learn from this interaction.
